DAWN LANDES + Luluc
Via her album, Fireproof, and the single, Bodyguard, Kentucky native Dawn Landes is proving to be more than just someone to watch. An astonishing mix of the urban & the rural, this definitely isn't the sound of yet another singer-guitarist plucked from the nearest coffee house and plonked down in front of a microphone. Having worked as a recording engineer for the likes of Ryan Adams & Phillip Glass, Landes is more than familiar with the ins and outs of the studio and has delivered a lovingly crafted and beautifully textured album that melds folk, country & indie without contradiction. The synergy of lulling acoustic guitar, softly strummed banjo & mandolin, and plenty of spooky paraphernalia, along with Landes's gorgeous voice, combine to deliver a record of delicious, ghostly wonder.

After touring overseas markets as a guest of the likes of Jose Gonzalez, Suzanne Vega, Midlake, Shannon Wright, Feist and Andrew Bird, Dawn Landes visits Australia for the first time this July for two shows only.

With all members of the band individually established in Australia's Roots music scene, a feature of Papa Lips is their dynamic \"Roots Revue\" style show. In 2008 this is enhanced with each member bringing new music to the stage.

GRACE KNIGHT
She's gone and done it again. First, Grace Knight took the Eurogliders pop band to chart topping success throughout the 80s, then she became Australia's number one selling Jazz Diva in the 90s, and now... for something completely different...!!

Working with Tom Misner and Jochen Muller from Mirage 301, Grace has just completed her latest album. Titled \"Zeitgeist\" this new album is a blend of textures, genres and styles, taking the listener on an exciting journey through sexy grooves, tribal rhythms, and amazing harmonies.

With little effort, Grace has earned a reputation as an emotive and sensual singer. This quality is captured live - and can be heard on her double album 'Live' recorded over three dazzling performances at Sydney's premier Jazz venue The Basement. The album features a combination of favourites from the preceding three albums, with special guests including Australia's best international country star James Blundell, jazz virtuosos: James Morrison and Don Burrows, and Bernie Lynch, Grace's singing partner from the Eurogliders days.

Always ready for change, Grace has been collaborating with musicians across a broad spectrum of styles, writing the songs for this amazing lady's new musical incarnation. Rooted in jazz and soul, Grace has crafted a beautifully sensual and moody collection of songs that form the basis of a totally revamped live show. SIMON TEDESCHI AND KEVIN HUNT - 'I Want to Play Like Him'
One of Australia's best known classical pianists, Simon Tedeschi returns home from the USA to perform with master of the jazz piano, Kevin Hunt in a dynamic concert entitled \"I want to play like him\" at Sydney's favourite jazz venue The Basement.

Tedeschi and Hunt serve up an exciting mix of audience favourites, with music from Bach to Duke Ellington and other classical and jazz greats such as Shostakovich, Debussy, Fats Waller, Brubeck and Oscar Peterson. Gershwin's much-lauded masterpiece, Rhapsody in Blue receives a new pianistic polish from the two maestros.

Particularly exciting for the duo will be their performance of Duke Ellington's historic 'Black' from Black Brown and Beige. Premiering at New York's Carnegie Hall in 1943 it portrayed the history of African Americans.

\"Simon has always loved jazz and has recently been 'soaking up' the American Jazz feeling. Equally I have always loved classical music for its detail of sound production and composition,\" said Kevin Hunt. \"The music we play together constantly weaves between jazz and classical forms, and now after years of playing together our improvising has become an exciting focus of the performance.\"

Tedeschi's musical genius has made him well known amongst world leaders, playing last year at the Sydney Opera House for APEC to the likes of George Bush, Vladmir Putin and Chinese President Hu Jintao. He also featured at a lecture-recital at the United Nations Headquarters in New York in 2007.

Kevin Hunt is a popular and versatile jazz pianist. He has, over the last 18 years, shared the stage with international artists including: Herb Ellis, Billy Cobham, Sheila Jordon, and Larry Adler. He has also recorded and performed with most of Sydney's prominent jazz artists.

He works with his own trio, the Kevin Hunt JS Bach Trio, and also tours extensively with Don Burrows. Kevin and Don conduct workshops and master classes for school and university students.

THE BAKERY + The Phonies + Brian Campeau
12 piece party explosion The Bakery hit the Basement to launch their long awaited debut mini album: 'The Bakery and The Beast'. After bursting onto the Sydney music scene in late 2006, The Bakery have quickly developed an infamous live reputation, packing out venues, and delighting crowds with their wild, exuberant shows. Their sound is a sweet and fizzy kick in the pants. Warm, funky, soulful and spicy. \"Neo-orgasmic-soul-funk-jungle-party-core\". It's up-beat, it'll make you move, it'll excite your feet and delight your brain.

The Bakery experience is much more than just a gig - it's a full-on show, a party, a wild hedonistic ass-shaking celebration. Whether it's a renegade street performance, or a New Years eve show at Peats Ridge Festival, The Bakery's crazy onstage antics, flamboyantly absurd costumes, and contagious energy keep crowds hooked till the very last beat.

The many members of The Bakery represent a cross section of Sydney's underground musical talent. Hailing from many ends of the musical spectrum; funk, soul, jazz, rock... these talented musicians join forces to form this powerhouse 'party-core' 12 piece. The band is fronted by 2 lovely lady divas, Emily Collins and Rosie Henshaw, whose delicate and powerful vocals will mesmerize you, draw you in and then set you on fire, over and over again. Behind them is a huge blasting six-strong horn section, psychedelic keys, crunching guitar, and the inimitable rumblings of The Bakery rhythm section, laying down fat beats and smooth grooves. The Bakery are truly big in both size and sound.

This launch show will showcase The Bakery at its very best. Expect outrageous costumes, sassy dancers, extreme acts of joy, a whole lot of dancing and a bevy of special surprises. This show is definitely not to be missed.

The Phonies are masters of that funky, cruisy hip hop sound. A strong cocktail on a sunny beach. Fat beats and smooth tones fronted by the unmatchable vocal stylings of Joel Rappaport.

\"Brian Campeau is to a guitar what a Thai stripper is to a ping pong ball, both utilising their instruments in the most unconventional ways. It's impossible to divert your attention from the performance on stage, fascinated by an act you never thought humanly possible. One might be forgiven for thinking Brian has confused his guitar with a piano, or a typewriter, or a cheese grater, or maybe a Thai stripper. But you won't hear anyone correcting him. His style lends itself to an intriguing, unconventional sound that turns your average song upside down and around into a masterpiece.\" (The Sandwich Club)

PROFESSOR GROOVE AND THE BOOTY AFFAIR + The Clarity Project + DJ Learned Hand (Funktrust) + DJ Stephen Ferris (FBI)
Professor Groove and The Booty Affair are legends of the Australian dance and funk scene, a Sydney Funk Institution. With their tentacles stretching back to the '90s with roots in Swoop, PG&TBA are professional specialists in Lowdown Streetfunk, Dirty Disco and ElectroHouse Grooves.

Professor Groove and The Booty Affair: Nu Funk, Archival Funk, The Whole Funk, Nuthin' BUT the Funk, Indomitable Funk! Playing their first gig since January, AND dropping new trax from their forthcoming album. With an evil lineup including Calvin Welch (ex-Midnight Star) on drums, ex-Teen sensation Paul Gray (Wa Wa Nee) on synth, Byron Luiters (bass), the Jman doing his environmentally friendly guitar, Don Dolla on Talkbox and synth and a rare, full frontal appearance from the newly-crowned King of good ol' Aussie Funk, Professor Groove.

THIS IS NOT A TRIBUTE! The REAL factual Professor Groove will appear. Beware of cheap imitations. NO holograms! There are NO guest singers, there will be NO songs by Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway, The Beatles or Steely Dan. There will be NO music stands on stage (although the Professor WILL read a book). The music is authentic, REAL and coming correct.

And yet there's more, because The Clarity Project unleash their new proto-Minneapolis style grooves and The Learned Hand (Funktrust) and Stephen Ferris (FBI) will fill the gaps, pauses and interstices with blistering beats and breaks, new, old and otherwise.

\"It's a STONE COLD FUNK ATTACK!\" (3D World)

\"...an incandescent burst of live Future Skool Funk\" (Stephen Ferris, DJ: FBI Radio)

\"With their bottom-heavy roots around that part of the patch where Parliament, James Brown, The Meters, Level 42, Stereo MCs and Cameo meet, this five piece lay on a butt-wobbling collection that is a load of fun.\" (Peter Holmes, Sun-Herald)

\"A funk throwdown filled with brutally extended jams, sleazy lowdown JB and Sly-style funk, fat disco grooves, and large dollops of old skool rhyming and chanting. With duelling wah guitars and a subterranean bottom end, The Professor and his cohorts will blow your minds and shake your rumps. Guaranteed....or your whiteness back. After a stunning debut album produced by Don Was and a tour with Alicia Keys, vocal powerhouse Nessa Morgan returns to the Australian music scene with not one but two albums. The journey to and from the US inspired the first album out JULY 29, 'Nessa Morgan presents NesKa', a contemporary R&B album featuring slick hip hop grooves, cutting edge production (by the likes of Shannon Sanders and XP) and irresistible hooks.

TEX PERKINS with James Cruickshank + Mike Noga and The Gentlemen Of Fortune
After The Cruel Sea played a few killer shows throughout Easter, Tex Perkins is hitting the road again - this time just bringing his swag and acoustic guitar. Joining Tex on his travels is good friend and former Cruel Sea cavalier James Cruickshank. Tex and James had some good laughs, some good stories and played some quality shows as they staggered around the country together in December last year. Not satisfied with just that tour, the boys are doing it all over again.

Tex Perkins is not one to take a break. In his spare time, he has just finished the recordings for his new studio album, being released through Universal Records this year. This latest recording has left Tex itching to hit the road again.

Tex's perfect accomplice for his travels is James Cruickshank, who has a history of sharing the stage with Tex, whilst also being an occasional Dark Horse, a regular Blackeyed Susan, and a honorary member of the Mick Harvey and Nick Barker clans. Last July James made a celebrated reappearance onto the music scene with his latest creation 'Hello Human' to glowing national reviews.

Opening proceedings at all shows will be the trio of Mike Noga, Pat Bourke and Gus Agars. In between various commitments to their \"other bands\" (The Drones, Dallas Crane and The Vandas) these three found a hole in their collective calendars last year and promptly formed a band, Mike Noga and The Gentlemen Of Fortune. On this tour however, the guys will be presenting songs from the quieter side of Mike Noga's catalogue including cuts from his critically acclaimed 'Folk Songs' album and material from the soon to be released follow up 'One Foul Swoop'.

So check out Tex and James as they make their way along the East Coast to play some classic quality tunes from their back catalogue... and possibly some new tracks too.

TINA HARROD
\"A dark-hued, womanly voice; assured in pitch and as powerful as a train when called upon, it also has little chinks of vulnerability, so one feels wooed by it,\" (John Shand, SMH)

Vocal - Tina Harrod Piano - Matt McMahon Bass - Jonathan Zwartz Drums Hamish Stuart

Tina Harrod's stunning second solo album 'Worksongs' proves she is equally at home channelling the power and emotion of jazz greats like Nina Simone and Billie Holiday as she is in more familiar soul terrain. And she does so with such impeccable intuition and raw feeling that it takes your breath away. \"My love of Nina Simone opened me up to a whole world of possibilities in music. The thing I love about Nina is that she could take a Bob Dylan song, change the feel, add a different kind of sophistication by manipulating a few chords and sing it with such depth without ever robbing the song of its essence,\" says Tina.

Tina and her stellar band bring the same approach to the varied collection of songs on this album from the excellent jazz spin on Stevie Wonder's 'Big Brother' to her beautiful rendition of Nick Drake's 'Riverman' or her sophisticated and revelatory take on Portishead's 'Glory Box'. Two of her own songs from her acclaimed debut album 'Shacked up in Paradise' are also reinvigorated here as are a definitive collection of jazz classics such as 'Comes Love', 'Round Midnight' and 'Feelin' Good'.

The musical pedigree of the trio of musicians featured on the album is also undeniable. \"Jonathan Zwartz plays upright bass and has a big influence on what we play and how we play it. Hamish Stuart is a permanent member of my musical family. Matt McMahon is on piano. Some of his work on the album is achingly delicate and it reminds me of him as a person - softly spoken with never a bad word to say about anybody,\" says Tina. The fact that she has been performing with this trio for almost six years meant that they were able to go into the recording studio and lay the tracks down in one day an immediacy and truthfulness that is reflected on the album.

Tina is no stranger to working with Australia's finest musicians starting back in the early 90s when she began performing with The Grandmasters and her subsequent long-standing personal and musical partnership with the much respected, late Jackie Orszaczky. \"Although Jackie did not play on this album, he encouraged me to do this project, he supported me and he was there the day we recorded. He will always be part of my music,\" says Tina.

MGT - Wolfgang Muthspiel (AUSTRIA), Slava Grigoryan & Ralph Towner (USA)
In 2005, Australian audiences were astounded by the debut tour of three internationally acclaimed guitarists - the extraordinary Austrian innovator Wolfgang Muthspiel, Australia's own Slava Grigoryan and US legend Ralph Towner.

'MGT', as they are now known, are returning to perform a string of spellbinding performances across Australia with music from their first release 'From a Dream'. The title piece, 'From a Dream', literally came to Towner in a dream. It has come to have another meaning, because for all concerned, this is truly a 'dream group'.

Although all three are classically trained and inspired, each guitarist has a distinctive approach to composition and performance. With varying geographic and musical backgrounds, Grigoryan, Towner and Muthspiel are all intent on expanding the guitar oeuvre, and have led vividly different forays into world, jazz, and modern classical music. 'From a Dream' celebrates these influences, highlighting their individual artistry within a trio format, creating a truly new ensemble 'voice' in the guitar world.

\"This was team artistry of the highest order, played with both intensity of emotion and a relaxed sense of the beauty of the sounds being created. For guitar enthusiasts this was undoubtedly one of the best concerts of the year.\" - The West Australian

\"...each player fed off the others' space, responding and reciprocating in an ever-expanding and expansive collaboration. This, for me, was where the real magic to an already magical concert occurred.\" - Classicalsource.com

DRAGON
Dragon have been inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame and perform at The Basement tonight.

Dragon from the '70s and '80s with Marc Hunter and Todd Hunter bought you hits like 'Are You Old Enough', 'April Sun in Cuba', 'Still In Love With You' and 'Rain' and albums 'Sunshine' and 'O Zambezi' and 'Body & The Beat'.

Dragon collected a stack of Gold and Platinum records, toured America twice and went on to be one of Australia's number one bands. Dragon dominated the Australian charts for three intense years from 1976 to 1978. At the end of the '70s the extraordinary union of Marc, Todd, Robert Taylor, Kerry Jacobsen and Paul Hewson had reached the end and then the tragic death of Marc in July 1998 meant the band was off the road for ten years.

2008 and Dragon are back and it is only fitting that after so many hits and continued airplay over the decades, ARIA honour Dragon and invite them into the ARIA Hall of Fame in July.

Dragon reformed after Todd performed in a concert at his son's school, and those old urges arose again. At the time it was simpler to leave Dragon as a distant memory. But when Liberation Blue label proposed an acoustic revisiting of the legendary band's towering body of work, Todd enlisted the superbly voiced Kiwi, Mark Williams, Canadian guitar slinger Bruce Reid and the young drum prodigy Pete Drummond and cut the acclaimed 'Sunshine To Rain' album in 2007. Since then there have been hundreds of performances and a second reformation album featuring versions of classic Oz rock songs. As at every stage of Dragon, the sound is unmistakable.

Sell out performances in Wollongong, Sydney and the Central Coast in New South Wales proves that the Dragon is back and the fans are loving the classic songs and brilliant performances from this line-up.

BARBARA MORRISON - MEMORIES of ELLA, SARAH & BILLIE
The undisputed first ladies of Jazz - Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Billie Holliday - are being saluted by US acclaimed jazz blues vocalist Barbara Morrison, who is returning by popular demand to Australian stages in August 2008.

Critics have lauded Barbara Morrison's extraordinary talents with \"The Captivating Ms. Morrison just tears 'em up!\" (LA Scoop); \"A joy! At Carnegie Hall, Barbara Morrison delivered one song a la Esther Phillips and another with Ella Fitzgerald's blithe scat singing.\" (New York Times); and \"She can be as playful as Ella, as thoughtful as Sarah, as naughty as Etta. Barbara Morrison, has an international following with her big personality and delicious sense of swing\" (The Jazz World Magazine).

Fresh off a 33 US City tour, co-headlining in an all-star tribute to legendary composer Harold Arlen (most recognizable for his genius behind the music for the classic film, The Wizard of Oz), Barbara now celebrates her 30th year in the music industry. Over the years she has performed with a virtual \"who's who\" of the Jazz and the Blues worlds. That list includes legends like; Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Charles, James Moody, Ron Carter, Etta James, Esther Phillips, David T. Walker, Jimmy Smith, Johnny Otis, Dr. John, Kenny Burrell, Terence Blanchard, Joe Sample, Cedar Walton, Nancy Wilson, Mel Torme, Joe Williams, Tony Bennett, and Keb' Mo. Additionally, Barbara Morrison guest stars with the Count Basie Orchestra, the Clayton-Hamilton Orchestra and Doc Severinsen's Big Band.

The dazzling Barbara Morrison has been featured on over 20 recordings. She has dazzled fans of a wide aray of genres from traditional Jazz and Blues to Gospel and Pop. Her melodic voice, with its two-and-a-half-octave range, is known worldwide, as are her rich, unique, soulful and highly spirited interpretations of both, familiar Jazz and Blues classics and original contemporary tunes. Equally as striking is Barbara Morrison's ability to belt out down-home, soul-stirring Blues. Her impassioned renditions of old and favorite torch songs are nothing short of breathtaking.

\"Morrison's work breathes the spirit of jazz improvisation. She can swing a tune with the best of them, and the pointed quality of her vocals allows her to penetrate even the most formidable instrumental accompaniment. To hear her ride the great, roaring orchestral sound is to behold one of the more accomplished jazz-blues singers in the business\". (The Sydney Morning Herald)

JAZZGROOVE AT THE BASEMENT featuring AUNTY RICHARD + Matt McMahon Solo
Aunty Richard launch their first release, 'Leaf Blower', in the Jazzgroove Association bi-monthly series at The Basement. This dynamic, artist-led and focused non-profit organization is committed to presenting and raising the profile of jazz-based music in Australia and is instrumental in creating a unique Sydney sound, where jazz meets everything else.

The talents of Jazzgroove members is unquestionable with our members consistently scooping the highest Australian awards. If you want to be inspired and hear the latest sounds Jazzgroove is it.

Leaf Blower brings together jazz, rock and electronic elements with a focus on composition and melody. The players are vibrant and assured, creating an edgy and engaging momentum. The tenor flutters, growls, blares and rasps; it shrieks in horror, bounces happily, cries with anguish and murmurs tenderly. Hooks are shared between bass and sax and the drums solo exquisitely.

Inspired by cites and urban life, Leaf Blower is a response to contemporary issues and world events. While some songs specify Los Angeles, Leaf Blower speaks to any landscape characterised by disconnection, yet where hope remains in riots and poetry found in corners. Aunty Richard achieves an uncanny, measured sound that maintains a live, spontaneous feel. Leaf Blower is an album that never lets you get too comfortable. There is calm, but anarchy is soon to follow; the band provides pause for reflection one moment and a call-to-arms the next. Sometimes desolate, more often manic, Leaf Blower is the soundtrack for every city.

Tonight the Aunty Richard line-up features Joel Woolf (sax), Franco Raggatt (guitar), Alex Hewetson (electric bass) , Tim Firth (drums).

Matt McMahon is a pianist, keyboardist & composer based in Australia. He leads his own groups and co-leads \"Band of Five Names\" with Phil Slater and Simon Barker. Matt won the national Jazz award in 1999, and the Freedman Jazz Fellowship for 2005. He has played and recorded with Dale Barlow, Greg Osby, Phil Slater, Katie Noonan, Vince Jones, Bobby Previte, Dave Panichi, Steve Hunter, Jazzfolk, Guy Strazz etc, and played concerts and festivals throughout Australia and Asia.

Matt has recently released his second album, Ellipsis, with his trio - Jonathan Brown on the bass and Simon Barker on the drums, playing mostly his pieces. The Sydney Morning Herald said \"after about 15 years on the scene he released his first solo album, 'Paths and Stream'. It was one of the half-dozen best releases of 2006. Now 'Ellipsis', the first release by his long term trio finally emerges and it is stunning... the music is as good as any current piano-trio jazz.\" (John Shand, SMH)

DAVID MURRAY'S BLACK SAINT QUARTET Sacred Ground Tour
The most widely recorded saxophonist of his generation, David Murray's brawny tenor has been heard in a dizzying array of configurations: solo recitals, piano less trios, duets with pianists and drummers; with the World Saxophone Quartet and his own quintets, sextets and octets; fronting big bands and orchestras with string sections and AfroCuban percussion ensembles; in the company of poets, singers and dancers and guitarists from James Blood Ulmer to Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead; and more recently with the Gwo-ka Masters of Guadeloupe. But these days the veteran avant gardist has settled into that most traditional of all saxophonic settings, the quartet with piano, bass and drum accompaniment that has long been the forum of choice for tenorists from Coleman Hawkins and Ben Webster to Dexter Gordon and John Coltrane. (Russ Musto, All About Jazz)

The Sacred Ground Tour revives the music of Murray's original Black Saint Quartet, a legendary musical collaboration going back some twenty years with an innovative new approach that visits some of the classic numbers as well as featuring many new compositions. This is jazz built upon its traditional roots, but also music that is challenging, politically charged, remarkably open and breathtakingly polyrhythmic.

David Murray - tenor saxophone, bass clarinet
Lafayette Gilchrist - piano
Malik Washington - drums
Jaribu Shahid - double bass

\"David Murray is far and away the greatest tenor saxophonist of his generation\" (Tom Hull, Village Voice)
